GBC Wireless Network
Currently enrolled students and
employees of GBC have access to the GBC wireless network which is available from most locations on campus. Common
indoor areas such as the library, lounges, apartments, and classrooms are
part of the network. Several outside locations are also accessible,
including the gazebo near the softball field, outside seating areas,
etc.
Please read the online
policies and review the
information listed here for the minimum requirements to connect and the use
of the network. Be sure that the requirements listed below are met
before requesting wireless access or scheduling an appointment.
Minimum requirements for connecting to the
GBC Wireless Network are as follows:
- Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, or OS X with the latest service pack and
critical updates
- Up-to-date antivirus software with access to updates throughout the
year to maintain your connection or you can request OIT to install the
provided antivirus software (available to students connecting to our
wireless network)
Wireless network adapter with WPA or WPA2 capability
- Be financially registered with the GBC Business Office
Appointments are only needed if you want
GBC OIT staff to install the College provided antivirus software or have
followed the provided configuration guidelines and cannot connect.
All appointments will be confirmed with an e-mail. Students are expected to be
available for the requested appointment* time.
Acknowledge that you have read the
policies and agree to abide by them by completing the
wireless access request online form
requesting wireless access and/or an appointment*.
*Use the same form to
cancel or reschedule an appointment. Students, who miss their
first scheduled appointment, will be given the opportunity to
have their wireless configuration completed one more time. If
the student misses both scheduled appointments, he/she will not be
configured for the wireless network for that semester.
Students who only have Saturday classes and miss the scheduled Saturday
appointment will not be scheduled a second appointment outside of the normally
scheduled hours Monday through Friday.
Using the GBC Wireless Network
- Only
currently enrolled students and employees of Goldey-Beacom College have access
to the
GBC wireless network. Up-to-date antivirus software must be installed on
all PCs or laptops connected to the network.
-
A wireless card or integrated wireless in a laptop with WPA or WPA2 capability
is needed. Be aware that certain
combinations of operating systems, device drivers, and hardware adapters may not
connect to our network. OIT will not be responsible for determining how to
configure these devices.
-
Verify that current antivirus software is installed and that the operating
system is at least Windows XP, Vista, OS X with the latest service packs and critical updates
installed.
-
Security policies on the network
will temporarily disconnect users who try to access P2P networks, e.g. Limewire,
BearShare, KaZaA, BitTorrent, etc., or network activity deemed to be harmful to
the GBC Network. If any of these are actively running during the initial
wireless setup, the configuration will not complete.
-
Request access and/or an appointment by completing
the wireless access request
online form.
Appointments are only necessary if you want the GBC OIT staff to install the
College provided antivirus software or you need assistance in configuring your
desktop/laptop. All appointments should be scheduled
with at least 24 hours notice. Use the same appointment request form to cancel or
reschedule an appointment. Students, who miss their first scheduled
appointment, will be given the opportunity to have their wireless configuration
completed one more time. If
the student misses both scheduled appointments, they will not
be configured for the wireless network for that semester. Students who
only have Saturday classes and miss a scheduled Saturday appointment will not be
scheduled a second appointment outside of the normally schedule hours Monday
through Friday.
-
Use of the GBC
wireless network is subject to all existing College policies for
Responsible Computing and Use of College Resources; it is to be used only for activity related to the educational
mission of the College. The details of this policy can be found on the GBC
website, www.gbc.edu/acc/policies.html.
- Abuse of the network
may result in loss of wireless access privileges and revocation of the
GBC network account.
- If you encounter
difficulties, please complete the wireless access request
online form, request an appointment, and note the problem under the comments section.
Note: The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at GBC does not
provide technical support for personally-owned computers.
We will assist with the configuration of our wireless network on your device
only.
