Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I connect to the GBC Wireless
Network with my personal desktop or laptop?
-
Where and how can I view my grades?
-
Students can view their grades by
logging into the Campus Web.
Grades for classes which have just completed cannot be viewed in the
'View Final Grade Report' window of the 'Grade Report' section.
To view them, first click on the 'student' tab, next click on 'View Final Grade Report'
in the Grade Report section, and then 'Printer
Friendly Grade Report' at the bottom of the page. Once all
grades are posted for all of the session classes, the update process
will be run which will update the credits and GPA information. At
that point, these grades will appear in the ‘View Final Grade
Report’ Window and the ‘Printer Friendly Grade Report’ will have
updated credit and GPA information.
-
May I bring my own access point or
wireless router to Campus?
-
No. Wireless connectivity is
provided by the College. Access points and wireless routers,
which are not part of the College network, would interfere with the
GBC Wireless Network and are not permitted on-campus.
-
Why
can't I bring my cordless phone?
-
What is my GBC username and
password?
-
Effective Fall 2009, a student's username
for
Email
and Campus Web
will normally be the first six characters of the student's last name plus the first initial of
the first
name and the first initial of the middle name. For example, John
Henry Jackson - jacksojh. If the name is common, a number may
have been added to the end. For example, John William Smith's
username could be smithjw2. Please note some students may have
a middle name but neglected to provide it when they applied.
If there is not a middle name on the GBC administrative system, the
username will not contain the initial for it. Prior to Fall
2009, the username did not include the middle initial. Usernames and password
combinations are emailed to
students prior to the beginning of the session if an email address
was provided on the GBC admission application. If an email
address was not provided, they are mailed through the postal service. Lab assistants in
the Academic Computing Center can help students if they have issues
with their network accounts.

-
What are the recommendations for
purchasing a computer or laptop?
-
The College does not require students to purchase
a computer; however, many parents and students request information
on computer configuration recommendations. When purchasing a new
computer or laptop, consider the following recommended
configuration:
- Operating System: Windows 7
- Memory: 4 GB
RAM
- Processor: Intel Core 2010 processors
(i3/i5/i7)
- Hard drive: 320 GB
- Networking: Integrated 802.11 b/g/n
- Anti-Virus software
- Anti-Spyware software
- Microsoft Office 2010
Does
the College have purchase programs with any vendors for discounted
computer purchases?
What is Copyright? Do I need
to worry about it?
-
Federal laws govern the right to
reproduce, publish, and sell original works.
-

software, books, online essays, art work, graphics, or other forms
of media, are under copyright unless indicated otherwise. A

under the law.

download it, share it, or use it without getting permission and/or

Where
is the Academic Computing Center?
Am I required
to use GBC Email?
-
While you
do not have to send email from your GBC
email account, you are required to access
it and read email from GBC faculty and
staff. Email serves as an official means of sending
information to students by faculty and
staff. These messages are sent to the
GBC email address. Please refer to
the policies on
the required use of the GBC email account.
Why do I get 'PAGE NOT FOUND' when I try to open an
email
message?
-
When an
email contains excessive
punctuation in the subject line, outlook web will not open the
email. If possible, email or ask the sender to resend the
email removing the punctuation from the subject line. Another
solution would be to access the email from outlook express instead
of outlook web. In order to use outlook express, a
profile needs to be set up. Instructions for this
are posted on the
gbcTECH
tab
in Campus Web, Outlook Resources, 'Setting up Outlook Express' or "Setting up Outlook
from home".
How
long after I graduate will I have access to my GBC email and the
Academic Computing Center?
